FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Bath & Shower Renovations

  • We are planning to renovate our bathroom, where do we start?

Our approach is to meet in person, in your home, in the space you are thinking of remodeling. Typically, it takes an hour or two to discover what’s not working in your home and what you’d like to change or fix to make things better. We call it a “discovery meeting” because that’s what we’re doing together, discovering what’s needed and sharing a path forward to learn what’s possible.

If you’re thinking about remodeling your bathroom, ask yourself the following questions:

    • What design style are you drawn to? (e.g. minimalist, modern, classic)
    • Have you determined your budget?
    • Have you checked your calendar for the most convenient time of year to renovate?
    • Have you considered a backup bathroom while you renovate?
    • How much space is there?
    • Will you be extending your bathroom? Shower, bath or both?
    • How much storage is required?
    • Having this information ready will make it that much easier to plan your bathroom remodel with our team.
  • How long will my bathroom renovation take?

The duration of a bathroom remodel can vary greatly depending on the scope of the project and the specific circumstances of the remodel.

Our average bathroom renovation project timeline will be 1-2 weeks. However, a major remodel that involves significant changes to the layout or requires extensive plumbing or electrical work could take 3-4+ weeks to complete. Smaller, less complicated projects may take half that time. Your decision-making ability in the design phase can also affect timing.

Regardless, since we aren’t paid in full until the project is done, we have every reason to complete your project as soon as we possibly can. We want the exact same thing—to get it done with great care.

  • Is the first estimate free?

Yes. Usually, homeowners shop around to compare costs and services before they choose a bathroom renovation contractor. BYN would help you get a sense of the cost and work required to create your perfect space, all at no charge to you.

  • What is the difference between an estimate and an invoice?

Estimate: When we first evaluate your project, we will provide you with an estimate. This is a rough idea of how much you will need to complete the project. An estimate is not the final cost and will change depending on the options and materials you choose. You will have a chance to review the estimate and address any questions before we start work on your project.

Final invoice: After we have finalized all the specifications for your project, we will present a final invoice that must be signed by you and a member of our team. It will list the cost of labor and materials and detail the scope of work.

  • How much do you charge per square foot for tile?

You determine the cost of your project by the decisions you make about the scope of your project and materials used. The average cost for professional installation of a ceramic or porcelain tile floor is $9 to $34 per square foot but can range depending on tile type and installation costs.

The following factors will determine the cost of your tile installation project:

    • Tile material: some materials are more expensive than others.
    • Labor: anything that increases the time a project takes will also increase labor costs.
    • Room size: the larger the floor, the more it will cost to tile.
    • Tile pattern and layout: more intricate patterns will take longer and have higher labor costs.
    • Subfloor prep: If the floor beneath the tile needs substantial repair, this will increase the total cost.
    • Grout and finishing: certain types of grouts are more expensive but less likely to require additional sealant.
  • Which areas do you serve?

Minneapolis, St. Paul, including Eden Prairie, Chanhassen, Wayzata, Shakopee, Prior Lake, Minnetonka, Chaska, Excelsior, Hopkins, Cottage grove, Mendota heights, Eagan, Woodbury, Farmington, Apple Valley, Burnsville, Rosemount, Bloomington, Edina and surrounding communities.

  • How can I know if the cost you provide is accurate and reasonable?

We have a full-time estimator to check and double-check our pricing and to hold our suppliers accountable for the lowest price negotiable. Our bath remodel professionals provide long-lasting results for your home. Call today to speak with a specialist about our bath/shower remodeling services, or to request additional information.

  • How much I have to pay upfront before we start the project?

Typically, we take care of all the materials and underlayment materials, so you don’t have to pay anything upfront, but the final payment is due upon the project completion. For major projects that take longer than 3 weeks we’ll require a pre-payment for the cost of the materials.

  • What is the warranty on your job?

At BYN, we understand that your bathroom remodel is an investment into your home, and our goal is always to maximize the return you see. For that reason, we only install products that are crafted for excellence, proven to perform, and protected by warranties!

We offer a one-year warranty period that starts on the calendar day when the project is completed. If your new tub or shower isn’t performing as stated within the warranty period, we’ll be there to make it right, guaranteed. The specific terms vary by product, but the impact is always the same: total peace of mind for you!

  • Can you install new tile over tile?

Yes!  If your floor is still level, free of cracks, and have a strong foundation you can install new tile over, but you’d better get the expert’s advice before you proceed. We offer a free consultation to make sure the subfloor could support the added weight of the new tile. If you would like to install it yourself, we could recommend the materials you’ll need to use for this particular project of yours.

  • If I have cracks on my grout, can I hire a company to take care of this?

We recommend having it checked by the experts first to get a better understanding of your grout cracks situation. Usually, the grout cracks do not happen unfounded. Most likely, there are certain underlayment-related issues that have caused this. Give us a call and we will help you find the cause of problem.

  • Will you provide plumbing services for my remodel?

Yes! We work with a licensed plumber who will take care of all the plumbing aspects of your bathroom or shower renovation project. We will make sure the plumbing is up to code, and we can provide recommendations on plumbing fixtures that can save water, energy and money down the road.

  • I am planning a DIY bathroom re-tiling. Can you help me choose materials and underlayment?

Give us a call for a free estimate and we will help you choose the right materials and underlayment you can purchase through us for your bathroom renovation. The risk of course is you are responsible for any future product warranty issues, backorders, or material shortages that will delay the completion of your project.

  • Shower Systems: Schluter Sealed System vs. Traditional System

Shower Systems: Schluter Sealed System vs. Traditional Shower Systems

The Schluter Sealed System and traditional shower systems have different benefits and drawbacks when installing tiled showers. Tiling contractors usually choose from several different methods and systems for moisture management, but broadly speaking they fall into two categories. There are traditional shower systems called water in/water out systems, and there are bonded waterproof shower systems, also known as sealed systems. Many factors must be considered when doing a complete review of systems, including final appearance of the tile installation, material costs, and labor costs.

As certified installers we always choose Schluter® because this system is designed to create a waterproof envelope behind the tile, protecting the shower from leaks, mold, and mildew. The Schluter system assembly provides complete moisture management as it does not permit moisture to penetrate into the tile substrate, either the base or the walls, and allows the assembly to dry completely between uses.

  • Do you install large format tile? How much different is large format tile installation vs regular tile installation?

    Large Format Tile Install_BYN_The_Tile_Crew

Yes, we do! Over the last few years, manufacturers of ceramic tiles have extended their range of large format tiles. Apart from the 3 and 5 mm thick 3 m x 1 m formats, they are now proposing formats that can reach sizes of up to 1.6m x 3.2m and thicknesses ranging from 5 mm up to 12 mm. The particularly large format and extremely low absorption rate, typical characteristics of porcelain, means that it is very important to identify the most suitable installation method for this type of tile with extreme care and precision. As with any floor and wall dressing, the durability and functionality of slim porcelain is also highly dependent on precise design parameters, appropriate substrate preparation and correct installation methods using adhesives, grouting mortars and joint sealants which have been chosen according to the type of dressing material and its area of use.
